Call for papers

Papers are sought for inclusion in the Jan/Feb 2012 issue of the Work Based Learning e-Journal, an open access international journal showcasing explorations and developments in the field of work based learning, with a view to encouraging dialogue between academics and practitioners on issues relating to reflective practice and practitioner learning.

Theme: Professional Doctorates and Knowing in Practice

This issue invites academics, practitioners and doctoral candidates to contribute to discussions around the relevance of the professional doctorate to knowing in practice. The notion of knowing in practice highlights knowledge as dynamically emerging from and embodied in real world practice and therefore circumscribed by social and organisational contexts, rather than as static assets possessed by individuals. As an academic qualification, then, to what extent and through what processes might the professional doctorate play a role in the development of knowledge and practices at the practitioner and organisational level? What methodologies can be used within the doctorate to analyse and contextualise practices and professional knowledge? Indeed, how might we address situational factors that have a bearing on the organisational impact of professional doctorates? Papers are sought in, but not limited to, the following areas of interest:

  • The interplay between reflection and practice in professional doctorates
  • Methodologies for professional doctorates
  • Professional doctorates and individual and organisational impact
  • Ethics of practitioner research
  • Power relations in the workplace and outcomes of practitioner research

Contributors can submit papers on these issues in the following journal sections and formats:

Refereed section - Conceptual or empirical papers on the issues highlighted above (4,000-10,000 words).

Professional section - Non-refereed opinion pieces, personal reflections and accounts providing insights on the above themes or descriptive accounts of project work (3,000-5,000 words).

Book reviews and posters are also welcome. Before writing a book review please contact us.

Submission date: 7th November 2011
